Neben Frankenstein und Graf Dracula gehört der Werwolf zu den klassischen Horrorfiguren des 20ten Jahrhunderts und während Frankenstein schon vollkommen aus der Mode ist tauchen Vampire und Werwölfe doch immer noch relativ häufig auf, zuletzt zusammen bei Underworld. Ein weiterer Werwolf Film läuft zur Zeit in den Kinos und ist zugleich ein Remake des angeblich besten Werwolf Films „Der Wolfsmensch“ von 1941 den ich aber leider nicht gesehen habe. Also gehe ich ganz unvoreingenommen an diese Kritik, was bei mir und dem Thema Fortsetzungen und Remake relativ selten ist.
Wolfman spielt Ende des 19ten Jahrhunderts in einer relativ kleinen, ruhigen Englischen Provinz namens Blackmoor, wo eine mysteriöse Serie blutiger Morde die Menschen in Atem hält. Lawrence Talbot(gespielt von Benicio del Toro) kehrt nach Jahren in seine alte Heimat zurück um sich über die Todesumstände seines Bruders zur informieren. Nach ein paar Anhaltspunkten macht er sich auf die Suche, nach den Zigeunern, mit welchen sich sein verstorbener Bruder umgab. Doch dann wird das Lager der Zigeuner angegriffen und Lawrence von einer mysteriösen Kreatur verletzt. Als er sich im Haus seines Vaters (Anthony Hopkins) von seinen Verletzungen erholt findet er ein schreckliches Geheimnis heraus.
Die Story an sich ist sehr klassisch aufgebaut und hält keine sonderlichen Überraschungen bereit, dafür wurden sehr viele Schreckmomente eingebaut die den ganzen Titel doch etwas auflockern. Kurz gesagt trotz der vielen Dialoge wird der Film zu keinem Zeitpunkt langweilig. Dennoch habe ich von den Effekten speziell von der Verwandlung von Mensch zum Wolf etwas mehr erwartet. Die Szenen der Umwandlung hätten für meinen Geschmack deutlich umfangreicher sein können. Auch mit der Darstellung des Werwolfs war ich nicht zufrieden, der Werwolf in Wolfmann sieht eher wie ein Mensch mit zu starker Körperbehaarung aus. Es besteht sogar enorme Verwechslungsgefahr zu einem Wookie. Also wirklich, ein Werwolf sollte vor allem böse aussehen und nicht wie ein dicker stark behaarter Mensch, die Macher von Underworld haben das begriffen, denen ihre Lykaner sehen eher nach Wolf als nach Mensch aus.
Die Schauspielerische Leistung von Benicio del Toro hielt sich auch in Grenzen, er brachte die Rolle zwar glaubhaft herüber, dennoch schien er mir nicht die Idealbesetzung zu sein. Anthony Hopkins hingegen glänzte einmal mehr durch eine unglaubliche Fähigkeit sich einem Film anzupassen, er wirkte absolut glaubhaft und stellte die Figur des vereinsamten Vaters perfekt dar. Die weibliche Hauptrolle gespielt von Emily Blunt hielt sich souverän im Hintergrund.
Fazit: Wolfman ist ein solider Horrorfilm für alle Fans des Genres, kann aber nicht in allen Punkten komplett überzeugen, denn die Gestallt des Werwolfes und die zum Teil langatmigen Dialogszenen verderben einem einiges an Filmspaß. Dennoch ist Wolfman ein gelungener Horrorfilm und öffnet vielleicht die Tür für weitere Werwolf Filme, denn diese klassische Horrorfigur hat bei mir in keisterweise an Interesse verloren.

Ich liebe Horrorfilme und bei diesem war ich mit sicher, dass er eines der besten Werwolffilme ist, die ich gesehen habe. Die Hauptrolle mit Emily Blunt zu besetzen fand ich persönlich richtig gut, weil der Charakter genau ins Bild passt. Die langatmigen Dialogszenen haben mir auch nicht gefallen, hier hätte man etwas kürzen müssen.
